During his 2011 series of Days on the District, Bishop Thomas J. Bickerton presented clergy with the United Methodist Call to Action, warning of an impending "death tsunami" for the church unless leaders find ways to overcome "an emerging crisis of relevancy."

He called on the clergy to meet with their congregations to examine their current situation, set strategic goals and move to reverse current trends that, if not addressed, could lead to death in 10 years.

The information is based on a report and recommendations issued in 2010 by a denominationwide Call to Action Steering Committee. The group was charged with assessing the current situation and making recommendations to reorder life and ministry for greater effectiveness in achieving the mission to make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world.
